The low down

Part of the economic revival of interior China since the 1990s has concentrated on building facilities for research and development. As part of this, Xi’an has become an important industrial and educational center of the central-northwest region and Qimonda Xi’an’s research and development facility, located in the Xi'an High-tech Industries Development Zone, is an important milestone on this path.

Dynamic dynastic capital

Dating from the 11th century B.C., Xi’an is one of the most important cities in Chinese history and has been a center of power for over 3,000 years. Thirteen dynasties made Xi’an one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China and gave rise to the nickname, “Rome of the East”. As the eastern terminus of China’s famous Silk Road, Xi’an was always a destination for travelers and this remains true to this day, now of course facilitated by the largest international airport in northwest China. Although the biggest tourist attraction in modern times is the Terracotta Army, pagodas dot the city landscape and the old city is encircled by a remarkably well-preserved city wall, dating from the 14th century. Xi’an’s rich and varied history is evident in the architecture of the city, a blend that covers several ancient dynastic styles, as well as modern skyscrapers.
